Oxygen Builder developer, UK and worldwide

Oxygen gives you complete control over WordPress markup — if the person using it knows what they're doing. I work remotely with businesses and agencies across the UK and worldwide: clean, semantic output, sub-second load times and no plugin sprawl to unpick later.

Pile of natural wooden building blocks

Oxygen Builder work for businesses and agencies, UK and worldwide

Oxygen is a visual site builder for WordPress that lets you build every part of a site, headers, templates and page layouts, without a theme deciding what the markup looks like. In careful hands it gives you tidy HTML, small CSS and JavaScript files, and a structure another developer can follow. In careless hands it gives you the same mess as any other builder, just harder to spot.

I have spent over fifteen years working with WordPress, and I use Oxygen where it suits the job. I work alone, so the person you brief is the person building. Everything is done remotely, so it makes no difference whether you are in London, Leeds, Dublin or Denver. This page is written for two audiences: business owners who have been told their site needs an Oxygen developer, and agencies or in-house teams who need a specialist to build, rescue or take on overflow work. Day rates are by arrangement; send the brief and you will get a scoped answer, with a fixed price where the work can be defined up front.

What's included

  • Full Oxygen Builder site build, or takeover of an existing one
  • Custom PHP where Oxygen alone won't do the job
  • Reusable component library so your team can add pages safely
  • Performance tuning to a sub-second average page load
  • Data-capture forms and user-input logic flows
  • Handover documentation and a walkthrough call

Why Oxygen over a page builder

Clean, semantic markup
Oxygen outputs only what you build. No wrapper soup, no shortcodes baked into your content.
Faster by default
Less CSS and JS on the page means better Core Web Vitals without a caching plugin doing the heavy lifting.
No licence lock-in per site
Oxygen is a one-off licence, so you're not adding another annual subscription to the stack.
Easier to maintain
A structured build is quicker to change two years later, whoever picks it up.
Builder laying blocks with a trowel
Child building a house from colourful wooden blocks
Bricklayer in a hard hat building a wall

When Oxygen is the right choice, and when it isn't

Oxygen suits sites where layout control, speed and long-term maintainability matter: brochure sites with a lot of custom design, service businesses with repeatable templates, and builds that will be edited by several people over the years.

I would not use it every time, and I will say so at scoping. Cases where I would suggest something else include:

  • A small site that the owner wants to edit with the standard WordPress block editor and nothing else
  • A project whose existing team already works happily in another tool, where switching would only add cost
  • Work that is mostly custom functionality with minimal front-end design, where
    plain WordPress development
    is simpler

If the honest answer is that Oxygen adds nothing for your project, you will hear that before any money is spent, and I will point you towards the simpler option that does the job.

Takeovers and rescue jobs

A lot of Oxygen work arrives half-finished or inherited from someone who has moved on. Before I quote for changes, I audit what is there so you know the real state of the site rather than a guess.

That audit looks at how the templates and reusable parts are organised, whether styles are consistent or scattered, how many plugins are doing work Oxygen or a few lines of code could do, and what is slowing pages down. You get a plain summary: what is sound, what is fragile and what I would fix first, with the order of priorities and the cost of each.

Some sites only need tidying and a handover. Others need a proper rebuild of certain sections, and I would tell you which parts are worth keeping. Nothing gets changed until you have agreed the plan. Once the site is stable, a rolling website maintenance plan can keep it that way.

Working with agencies

If you run an agency or a design studio, I can act as the build specialist behind your name. That means white-label work: you keep the client, the relationship and the invoice, and I deal with you rather than your customer unless you ask otherwise.

Typical arrangements include:

  • Building a site from your finished design files
  • Taking over a build that has stalled, or that your team does not have time to finish
  • Adding custom functionality or integrations to an Oxygen site you already run
  • Overflow capacity when you are busy

You keep ownership of client domains, hosting accounts and licences, with no lock-in. I work remotely with clients across the UK and worldwide, by email, WhatsApp, phone or video call — my 09:00–21:00 UK hours overlap with most of Europe and the US East Coast — and I can document the build so that your own team can carry on with it afterwards. If you would like to see the kind of sites I build first, the work page has examples.

Performance and handover

I build for speed from the first template rather than trying to bolt it on at the end. That means keeping stylesheets and scripts lean, loading only what each page needs, sizing images properly and being wary of plugins that add weight for small gains. My finished sites average under 0.8 seconds to load.

Handover matters just as much. A site your team cannot safely edit is a liability, so I set up reusable components and clear templates, write documentation for how the build is organised, and finish with a walkthrough call. If your staff need a second session once they have used it for a while, ask. The aim is a site that does not depend on me to change a heading or add a page.

For work that involves changes beyond Oxygen itself, such as custom fields or connections to other systems, the wider approach is described on my WordPress development page.

How an Oxygen project runs

Whether it is a new build, a rescue or agency overflow, the work follows the same four stages.

STEP 1
Audit or brief
For an existing site I audit it first and report back. For a new build I take your brief and any design files, then confirm what is in scope.
STEP 2
Plan
You get a written plan covering templates, components, functionality and price, agreed with you in writing before any building starts.
STEP 3
Build
I build on a private copy, test it across devices and browsers, and check speed before it goes anywhere near your live site.
STEP 4
Handover
Launch, then documentation and a walkthrough call so your team can edit with confidence. Ongoing care is optional, not required.

Common questions

Can you take over a site someone else built in Oxygen?
Yes. Takeovers and rescue jobs are a regular part of the work. The first step is an audit so you know what state it's in before committing to anything.
Will I be able to edit the site myself?
Yes. Builds are set up with reusable components and clear templates, and you get a walkthrough on handover.
Do you work with other agencies?
Often. White-label Oxygen and WordPress work for agencies who need a specialist is welcome — you keep the client relationship.
How long does a typical build take?
A brochure site is usually two to four weeks from sign-off; e-commerce and integration work takes longer and gets its own timeline at scoping.
What happens after launch?
Rolling care plans cover updates, backups, security monitoring and support. You can also come back ad-hoc if you'd rather not commit monthly.
Is Oxygen Builder still worth using?
Yes, for the right projects. It suits sites needing tight control over layout and code, and teams who value maintainability. It is not the best tool for everything, and I will tell you if a simpler approach fits your project better.
How much does an Oxygen developer cost?
Oxygen work is charged by day rate, agreed by arrangement rather than published, because projects vary so much. Send the details and you will get a scoped quote, fixed where the work can be defined up front.
Can you fix an Oxygen site that is slow or broken?
Usually, yes. I start with an audit to find what is slowing it down or causing the fault, then tell you what needs fixing, in what order and at what cost. Some problems are quick; a few need part of the site rebuilt.
Can I keep my client if I bring you in on a project?
Yes. For white-label work you stay the client's point of contact and I work with you. You also keep ownership of their domain, hosting and licences, so there is no lock-in and nothing standing between you and the client.
Do you work with clients outside the UK?
Yes. Everything is done remotely, so I work with businesses and agencies across the UK, Europe, the US and further afield. My hours are 09:00–21:00 UK time, which overlaps with most of Europe and the US East Coast, and we can talk by email, WhatsApp or video call.

Simon was fantastic when sorting out my website, locating the issue quickly and offering a solution. In this case, he transferred my site to a new theme with some slight amendments that was compatible with the latest wordpress and elementor updates. He was very quick, efficient and professional, and had no problem explaining what he needed to do in plain language to this novice website owner! I would not hesitate to use Simon's services again as his wealth of knowledge and experience clearly showed in our interaction. Highly recommended.

Contacted Simon after reading reviews of his work to resolve a few issues I had with an existing site which I couldn't solve. I found Simon to be professional, very knowledgeable and honest. He doesn't charge the earth and is always available if you have a problem. It makes a refreshing change to have a 1 to 1 service instead of repeating the issues to a different person every time. So impressed with his work ethic and stylish designs that I've commissioned a brand new site from him.

Simon migrated my site from Squarespace to Wordpress. From the get-go he was very friendly and eager. Throughout the process he was patient with me (I had a lot of edits) and even though the site build was very complex he was happy to do it. I'm extremely happy with the end result—my website has never looked so good! 🤩 I'm looking forward to working with Simon as my website host, as I know if I have any issues he will be able to sort it for me. Thank you Simon! 🌟 If you want to see another example of what Simon can do, check out www.cherrychumagazine.com 💜
