Web design, Mansfield

A website is a sales tool, not a brochure. Every build starts with what you actually need it to do — take enquiries, sell products, get found locally — and the design follows from there.

A website built around the jobs it has to do

Most small-business websites fail for a simple reason: nobody decided what they were for. A good site has one or two clear jobs, and it does them well. It gets the phone ringing, fills in an enquiry form, books appointments, or takes orders. Every page, button and heading should push a visitor towards one of those actions, and anything that doesn’t is clutter.

That is how I approach every project. I’m a single developer based in Mansfield, working with businesses across Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and the rest of the UK. You deal directly with the person designing and building your site, and I do everything by phone, WhatsApp, email and video call. Prices are fixed and agreed before I start, and web design begins from £850. Most brochure sites take two to four weeks from sign-off, and I’ll explain anything unfamiliar as we go. You keep ownership of your domain, hosting account and licences throughout.

What's included

  • Bespoke design, mobile-first, no recycled themes
  • Copy structure and page hierarchy planned before design starts
  • Conversion paths mapped to how your customers actually buy
  • On-page SEO groundwork built in from day one
  • Sub-second average page load
  • Handover walkthrough so you can edit it yourself

Why bespoke over a template

Built around your business
A template forces your content into someone else's structure. A bespoke build does the opposite.
Nothing you don't need
No demo content, no unused plugins, no page-builder weight slowing every visit.
Designed to convert
Layout, calls to action and enquiry flow are decided deliberately, not inherited from a theme demo.
Yours to keep
No proprietary platform, no licence you can't take elsewhere.

Starting from what your site must do

Before I open a design tool, I ask a few plain questions. What is the most valuable thing a visitor can do? How do your customers usually decide to get in touch or buy? A plumber needs a phone number that is easy to tap. A therapist needs a booking route that takes seconds. Once the goal is clear, I plan the pages and write the structure of each one, so the design has a purpose. You can see some recent projects.

You don’t need to be technical or have a finished plan. What helps:

  • Your logo and brand colours, if you have them. If not, see
    logo and brand design
    .
  • Photos of your work or team. Real photos usually beat stock images.
  • A rough idea of the pages you think you need.

You don’t need to choose a theme or understand any jargon. I handle those decisions and explain them plainly.

Designed for phones, speed and search

Most visitors will see your site on a phone first, so I design for the small screen and then scale up to desktop, not the other way round. Buttons are large enough to tap, text is readable without zooming, and your phone number and enquiry form are never more than a thumb’s reach away, wherever visitors are on the page.

Speed matters just as much. My builds average a page load of under 0.8 seconds, because I use clean code and only load what each page needs. Slow sites frustrate visitors, and people leave before the page has even appeared.

I also lay the groundwork for search engines as I build: sensible page titles, clear headings, descriptions for images and a logical structure. That gives you a solid base, but no one can promise rankings. If you want ongoing work to help local customers find you, local SEO builds on it.

What affects the price of a website

Web design starts from £850. Where your project lands depends on a handful of things:

  • Number of pages and how much custom design each needs.
  • Features such as booking forms, galleries, quote calculators or member areas.
  • Selling online. A shop is a bigger job, and I’d quote it separately as a
    WooCommerce build
    .
  • Copy and photography. If you supply them, the cost is lower; if I help produce them, it is higher. Text and images are often what holds a project up, so it pays to gather them early.

After a short conversation you get a fixed-price quote, and payments are staged across the build so you’re never paying for work that hasn’t happened yet. I’ll also tell you plainly if something you’ve asked for isn’t worth the money. If spreading the cost suits you better, there are pay-monthly websites from £65 a month. To get a fixed price for your own site, send me a short brief.

How it works

Four stages, and you see progress at each one before we move on.

STEP 1
Plan
We talk through your goals, customers and the pages you need. You receive a fixed-price quote and a clear page structure before any design begins.
STEP 2
Design
I design the key pages for phone and desktop, share them for feedback, and refine until the layout and message feel right to you.
STEP 3
Build and test
I build the site with clean code, add your content, then test forms, speed and every screen size on a private copy.
STEP 4
Launch and handover
Once you have signed off, the site goes live. I then walk you through editing it yourself, and stay on hand for questions.

Common questions

How long does a website take?
Most brochure sites are two to four weeks from sign-off. Larger builds get their own timeline agreed at scoping.
Do you write the content?
Structure and guidance come as standard. Full copywriting can be added if you'd rather not write it yourself.
Can you redesign my existing site?
Yes. Redesigns and rebuilds are common — the first step is an audit of what's worth keeping.
What do I need to provide?
Logo and brand assets if you have them, photos, and a rough idea of the pages you need. Everything else can be worked out together.
How much does a small business website cost in the UK?
It varies with the number of pages and features. My web design starts from £850, quoted as a fixed price after we've discussed what you need. Adding an online shop or custom features increases it, and I'll show exactly why in the quote.
Can I update the website myself afterwards?
Yes. Every site is built on WordPress, and at handover I show you how to edit text, swap photos and add pages. If you'd rather not touch it, I can look after updates for you on a care plan.
Will I own my website when it's finished?
Yes. You keep ownership of your domain, your hosting account and any licences. There's no lock-in, so if you ever want to move on, you can take everything with you.
Do I need to know what pages I want before we start?
No. Most people begin with a rough idea. We work out the pages together from your services and how customers find you, and I'll suggest what's worth including and what isn't.

Simon was fantastic when sorting out my website, locating the issue quickly and offering a solution. In this case, he transferred my site to a new theme with some slight amendments that was compatible with the latest wordpress and elementor updates. He was very quick, efficient and professional, and had no problem explaining what he needed to do in plain language to this novice website owner! I would not hesitate to use Simon's services again as his wealth of knowledge and experience clearly showed in our interaction. Highly recommended.

Contacted Simon after reading reviews of his work to resolve a few issues I had with an existing site which I couldn't solve. I found Simon to be professional, very knowledgeable and honest. He doesn't charge the earth and is always available if you have a problem. It makes a refreshing change to have a 1 to 1 service instead of repeating the issues to a different person every time. So impressed with his work ethic and stylish designs that I've commissioned a brand new site from him.

Simon migrated my site from Squarespace to Wordpress. From the get-go he was very friendly and eager. Throughout the process he was patient with me (I had a lot of edits) and even though the site build was very complex he was happy to do it. I'm extremely happy with the end result—my website has never looked so good! 🤩 I'm looking forward to working with Simon as my website host, as I know if I have any issues he will be able to sort it for me. Thank you Simon! 🌟 If you want to see another example of what Simon can do, check out www.cherrychumagazine.com 💜
