Start selling online without inheriting a shop you're scared to touch. Product data, payments, shipping and fulfilment set up so the day-to-day running is genuinely simple.

A WooCommerce shop built to be run by you

WooCommerce is the free shop software that runs inside WordPress. It turns an ordinary website into a shop with products, a basket, a checkout and customer accounts. The software costs nothing; what you pay for is the hosting, the card fees your payment provider charges, and any paid extensions you choose to add. My fee is for setting it all up properly, from £2,400, quoted as a fixed price once I know what you sell.

A shop is different from a brochure site. People are handing over money, so it has to load quickly, the checkout has to be obvious, and the tax and shipping rules have to be right. I build every shop myself, with 15+ years of WordPress behind it and nothing outsourced, and I hand it over so that adding a product or packing an order is a job you can do without ringing me. If you get stuck, I reply to most enquiries the same working day.

What's included

  • Full WooCommerce setup with your product catalogue
  • Payment gateways, tax and shipping rules configured
  • Checkout tuned to reduce drop-off
  • Stock, variations and bulk product import
  • Order emails and customer accounts
  • Training on adding products and processing orders

Why WooCommerce

You own the store
No per-transaction platform fee and no risk of the rules changing under you.

Sits inside your site
One WordPress install for content and commerce, not two systems bolted together.
Easy to run
Set up properly, daily order processing takes minutes, not a training course.

Parcel being handed over the counter

What a full shop build includes

A shop is a lot more than a product page with a button. Here is what the build covers, so nothing turns up later as a surprise extra:

  • Catalogue: categories, product pages, variations such as size and colour, and stock levels.
  • Payments: card payments through a provider such as Stripe or PayPal, set up in your own account.
  • Tax and VAT: prices and VAT set up the way your accountant expects, and shown correctly at checkout.
  • Shipping: rates by weight, price or area, plus free-delivery thresholds and collection if you offer it.
  • Emails: order confirmations and dispatch notices in your own wording and branding.
  • Accounts: customers can log in, see past orders and reorder.

All of it is scoped up front, so the fixed price covers what we agreed. If you need something more unusual, such as trade pricing or subscriptions, we settle that at the scoping stage too, before you commit to anything, so the price you are quoted is the price you pay.

Why speed matters more on a shop

On a brochure site, a slow page is annoying. On a shop, it can cost you the sale. Shoppers are comparing you with other sellers, and a basket page that hangs is an easy reason to give up and go elsewhere.

Shops are also heavier to run than ordinary sites. Every product, price and stock check is a lookup, and the basket and checkout can’t simply be stored and replayed the way a normal page can. That is why the hosting and the way the shop is set up matter so much. I build with clean, purpose-built code rather than piling on plugins (small add-on programs), and I test the basket and checkout as carefully as the front page. The average page load across my sites is under 0.8 seconds, and I aim to keep a shop as close to that as its catalogue allows.

If you would like to know more about the hosting side, see my WordPress hosting plans.

Moving your shop from another platform

If you already sell on another platform, the worry is usually the same: will I lose my customers and my place in Google? A careful move keeps both.

The important part is the web addresses. Each product and category page already has an address that Google knows about and that other sites may link to. When the shop moves, I match old addresses to the new ones with redirects, so anyone following an old link or search result lands on the right page rather than an error. I then check the new site in Google Search Console, the free tool that shows how Google sees your site.

Products, customers and order history can usually be brought across, depending on what the old platform lets me export, and large catalogues are imported in bulk rather than typed in by hand. I can’t promise your rankings will not move at all during a switch, because Google has the final say, but planning the move is what gives you the best chance of keeping them.

Running the shop day to day

A shop only earns its keep if you are comfortable using it. Once it is live, I show you how to add and edit products, change prices, handle stock, process and refund orders and read your sales figures, by video call and in writing, so you have something to refer back to.

Behind the scenes, a live shop needs looking after: updates to WordPress and its plugins, security checks and backups. You can do that yourself, or hand it to me through website maintenance, from £45 a month. You keep ownership of your domain, your hosting account and your licences throughout, so there is no lock-in either way. Either way, you will always know who is looking after the shop and how to reach them.

If cash flow is tight at the start, the pay-monthly websites option may be worth a look, and you can see finished builds on my work page. When you are ready, tell me what you sell and I will scope it.

How it works

Every shop follows the same four steps, with a fixed price agreed before any work starts.

STEP 1
Scope the shop
You tell me what you sell, roughly how many products, and how you ship and get paid. I write up a fixed-price quote covering exactly that.
STEP 2
Set up and import
I build the shop, configure payments, VAT and shipping, and import your products in bulk, on a private copy that customers can't see.
STEP 3
Test the buying journey
I place test orders from start to finish on phone and computer, checking emails, tax, delivery costs and refunds before anything goes live.
STEP 4
Launch and training
The shop goes live and I train you on products and orders. I stay on hand for questions once you are running it.

Common questions

How many products can you handle?
From a handful to several thousand. Large catalogues are imported in bulk rather than typed in.
Can you migrate from Shopify or another platform?
Yes — products, customers and order history can usually be brought across.
What about payments?
Stripe, PayPal and most UK gateways are straightforward. Card fees stay between you and the provider.
Will it be fast with a big catalogue?
Yes, with the right hosting and caching setup, which is part of the build rather than an afterthought.
How much does a WooCommerce website cost?
My WooCommerce builds start from £2,400, fixed price. The final figure depends on things like the number of products, variations, shipping rules and any features such as subscriptions. WooCommerce itself is free, but you will also pay for hosting, card fees and any paid extensions.
Is WooCommerce better than Shopify?
Neither is right for everyone. Shopify is a monthly subscription that hosts the shop for you. WooCommerce is free software you run on your own WordPress site, so you own everything and can shape it freely. Tell me what you sell and I'll give you an honest view.
Do I need to charge VAT on my WooCommerce shop?
That depends on your business, and your accountant is the right person to confirm it. What I do is set the shop up to match: prices shown with or without VAT, VAT calculated at checkout and clear on the receipts customers get.
Can I take card payments through WooCommerce?
Yes. I connect Stripe, PayPal or another UK payment provider to your own account, so payments go straight to you. The provider charges its own card fees, which WooCommerce and I have no control over, and I will explain them before you decide.

Simon was fantastic when sorting out my website, locating the issue quickly and offering a solution. In this case, he transferred my site to a new theme with some slight amendments that was compatible with the latest wordpress and elementor updates. He was very quick, efficient and professional, and had no problem explaining what he needed to do in plain language to this novice website owner! I would not hesitate to use Simon's services again as his wealth of knowledge and experience clearly showed in our interaction. Highly recommended.

Contacted Simon after reading reviews of his work to resolve a few issues I had with an existing site which I couldn't solve. I found Simon to be professional, very knowledgeable and honest. He doesn't charge the earth and is always available if you have a problem. It makes a refreshing change to have a 1 to 1 service instead of repeating the issues to a different person every time. So impressed with his work ethic and stylish designs that I've commissioned a brand new site from him.

Simon migrated my site from Squarespace to Wordpress. From the get-go he was very friendly and eager. Throughout the process he was patient with me (I had a lot of edits) and even though the site build was very complex he was happy to do it. I'm extremely happy with the end result—my website has never looked so good! 🤩 I'm looking forward to working with Simon as my website host, as I know if I have any issues he will be able to sort it for me. Thank you Simon! 🌟 If you want to see another example of what Simon can do, check out www.cherrychumagazine.com 💜
